Wall Street flashes sell signals as traders brace for wild swings

Behind the apparent calm of stock indices, there are signals setting off alarms for some technical analysts. The S&P 500 has started showing what's typically known as sell signals, and options market traders are positioning for sharp moves in some of the most closely watched stocks, such as Apple, Meta and Microsoft, according to MarketWatch.

These kinds of signals don't necessarily mean a drop is imminent, but they do reflect a shift in sentiment among some investors, who are starting to hedge against the possibility of volatility returning more forcefully. The options market is precisely the thermometer that usually anticipates these mood swings, since it shows how much investors are willing to pay to protect themselves against sharp swings.

Tech giants at the center of the storm

It's no coincidence that attention is concentrated on names like Apple, Meta and Microsoft. These companies form part of the core that has driven much of the market's gains in recent years, and any sign of nervousness around them tends to spread quickly to the rest of the market, given their weight in major indices.

It's worth keeping in mind that technical signals are just one piece of the puzzle, and markets can remain calm for long stretches even when these indicators activate. Still, they serve as a reminder that after months of gains fueled by enthusiasm over artificial intelligence, some investors are starting to prepare for choppier scenarios.
